USGBC-100pxThe project consists of the adaptive re-purposing of an existing 136,000 SF precast concrete structure of an industrial building, on a six acre site.  The 79,118 SF police headquarters is located on a single level building, and contains police administration offices, 911-dispatch, lock-up, fitness and locker room facilities, indoor shooting range, 35 indoor squad parking and 28 covered parking, and a training room that was built as a dual-purpose space which was converted into the Village’s Emergency Operations Center.  Riley Construction provided full professional preconstruction and construction management services throughout the successful delivery of the project.

The project was awarded LEED Gold certification, the project goal.  The new design included two interior courtyards that allow natural day light and views for the interior spaces, enhancing the aesthetic nature of the new building.

GREEN BUILDING FEATURES

  • Interior courtyards were“carved out” of the excess square footage allowing natural day lighting into the center of the building; the existing roof was raised to create clerestory windows, flooding the lobby with natural light.
  • Improved energy performance
  • Low VOC emitting materials
  • Enhanced stormwater management
  • Water efficient landscaping
  • Improved water efficiency/conservation through low flow fixtures
  • Light pollution reduction; The roof deck was removed to expose the existing roof purlins, creating an interesting rhythm to the entry, filtering the light, and maintaining the human scale, while the upper roof canopy provides weather protection
  • Construction waste management and recycling
  • Existing concrete slabs and foundations were ground and used for project back-fill. North courtyard walls sit on foundations of existing building loading docks
  • Over 82% of the project demolition and construction waste was recycled, including concrete, steel, aluminum and drywall
  • 28% of new building materials contain recycled content
  • 47% of new construction materials were manufactured within 500 miles of the project, substantially decreasing the amount of transportation energy required
