Riley Construction is providing general construction services for an 11,300 SF dry storage addition to Birchwood Foods’ production facility. Founded in Kenosha in 1936, Birchwood Foods manufactures a broad line of branded and private-label raw, frozen and fully cooked beef and pork products for many of the biggest foodservice and retail names across the country. They produce over six million pounds of product per week, generate $600 million in annual sales, and employ more than 750 people in four nationwide plants.
The addition provides food production grade sanitary storage for the company’s unique product offerings. The structure features two dock positions and an interior drive in dock with a 35-foot total clear height throughout.
A key challenge is constructing the addition that ties into the existing food production area with no compromises to food safety and quality, and no impacts to its 24/7 operations.
The site brings particular challenges due to its soft soil profiles. This requires the slab to be founded on caissons (39 in total) and requires a 10-inch reinforced structural slab with curbs to bear the load requirements of the forklifts on the forgiving soils, while meeting the cleaning requirements of an active food processing and production facility.
